Debbie and Betty Jo have been distributing July Jubilee laminated flyers to be displayed by businesses in Concan and Leakey. Julie said the schedule will be in The Leakey Star this week. Line up for the parade will start at 7:30 AM and judging will be from 9:00 – 9:30 AM. Sandy Lynam will ask her employees at the bank to help. Bob Albright will help with the line-up. The American Legion will lead the parade, with the American Legion Auxiliary following them. Betty Jo and Debbie will be the announcers. Debbie said the minimum age of 4 should be strictly adhered to regarding operation of motorized vehicles. Jack Hallum reminded them to announce to the crowd to remove their hats as the American flag passes by.
    • Arts & Crafts Vendors – Linda said there are a total of 97 booth spaces sold. Sandy Lynam asked about the committee that was formed to review the vendor rules. Betty Jo said Jimmie Walker was waiting for some information. Linda said the forms will be mailed out the first week in January, but she needs any changes to be made before then. Betty Jo said we do not have anyone who can distinguish between the jewelry sold what is handmade. A suggestion was made to ask Penny Maguire and Michelle Hood observe what the jewelry vendors are selling. Another problem is the vendors who park on the south street of the courthouse where vendor spaces are reserved. Robin said she will ask the sheriff if we can leave the street blocked off after the dance Friday night. Sandy said the bank will be closed Saturday, so we could block both the east and west sides of the street.
  • Chamber Lawn Care – Francisco Mendez was the only person to submit a bid. He will charge $20 each time he mows and trims the yard. He will water the plants, also. Robin said we are still trying to get the back of the building cleaned. Danny Rimkus has volunteered his trailer to remove the dirt and concrete. Some of the items belong to the EMS. Robin suggested getting the boy scouts to help, as community service.
  • New Sign At Courthouse – Some discussion took place regarding the sign at the courthouse, which belongs to the Chamber. Betty Jo said she would like to replace it with an electronic sign, which costs about $10,000. Jack Hallum said we would need permission from the County Commissioners and Judge. Betty Jo said First State Bank of Uvalde – Leakey Branch donated the Leakey ISD sign and maybe Hondo National Bank would donate the Chamber’s sign. Robin appointed Betty Jo Bates, Judy Fisher and Julie Corley to a committee to replace the old Chamber sign on the courthouse square.
  • Mixer – Robin reported the mixer sponsored by River Rim Resort in Concan was great. Debbie suggested we do some with our Concan members. Robin suggested the new Buckhorn Grill and River Bluff pavilion as good places.

Meeting adjourned.

These things and more are yours to enjoy when you visit the Frio Canyon, located in the beautiful Texas Hill Country between the towns of Kerrville and Uvalde.

Action here focuses on the upper Frio River, flowing with clear, cold spring water through 100,000 acres of scenic beauty. The Frio originates in northern Real County and, fed by springs and streams, tumbles over limestone rock to create waterfalls, rapids and pools on its way to Concan in Uvalde county. Along the banks are boulders, bluffs and grassy spots shaded by pecans, live oaks, sycamores and giant, centuries old, cypress trees.

Residents of this Land of 1100 Springs are proud of the natural beauty of their area and encourage visitors to help preserve it. Numerous river camps and lodges from Leakey to Concan - in addition to Garner State Park - offer visitors a variety of accommodations and outdoor activities. Year-round activities include fishing, hunting, bird watching, camping, cycling, and driving the spectacular mountain roads. In the fall, see the pristine nature of the canyon filled with the turning foliage's crimson and orange. Favorite summertime activities are swimming in and floating on the Frio. Horseback ride anytime in these tranquil surroundings.

Leakey, the Real County seat, provides charming examples of early Hill Country architecture: the hand cut, native stone structure of Real County Courthouse, First State Bank building and Leakey School, all on U.S. Highway 83. Markers at the courthouse commemorate the history of Leakey and its founders, John and Nancy Leakey, early settlers of Frio Canyon. Approximately six miles north of Leakey on Highway 336 a marker denotes the site of the McLauren Massacres, the last Indian massacre in the Southwest. Travel 7 miles south of Leakey on Highway 1120 to Rio Frio, the Canyon's first settlement, to see the nation s largest Texas Live Oak tree and the Lombardy Irrigation Ditch dug by pioneers to water their crops. The Real County Historical Museum at Leakey displays authentic furnishings, tools and personal items used by the early settlers of this unique ranching and farming valley. Plan to stop by and see the new Chamber Office/Visitor Center located in downtown Leakey. Local folks will welcome you warmly.
